Matt Johnson is the owner and lead cartographer at Johnson Cartographic LLC, a small independent mapping and GIS company based in Bloomington, Indiana. With over 20 years of experience in cartography and GIS, Matt specializes in creating clean, accurate, and visually engaging maps for a wide range of uses—from trail guides and wall maps to book illustrations and race courses.
His business began around 2005 under the name Journey Maps & Design, focusing on custom maps for publishers, outdoor guides, and educational materials. In 2019, Matt rebranded as Johnson Cartographic LLC to reflect a broader vision and expanded services. Since then, he’s taken on a growing number of race and event maps, alongside his traditional cartographic and GIS work.
Matt’s career has included major roles at respected organizations. He worked for seven years at National Geographic’s Trails Illustrated, producing detailed outdoor recreation maps. He then spent 10 years as the Cartographic Coordinator at the Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS), where he led map production and publication efforts. Today, he serves as the Assistant Director of Information Services at IGWS, where he helps guide digital data and mapping strategy—while continuing to run his business on the side.
Along with custom map design, Matt offers GIS services like terrain modeling, spatial analysis, data digitizing, and geospatial data management. His clients include publishers, nonprofits, race organizers, outdoor and environmental groups, and educators.
When he’s not making maps, Matt enjoys traveling with his family, rock climbing, and spending time outdoors. Recently, he’s taken up trail running and is gradually working his way toward competing in ultramarathon races.
